Helping disadvantaged students who are persistently absent from school.

We firmly believe that education is the key to social mobility. But so many children are missing out on the essential education they deserve. Some of these children are dropping out of education forever due to serious challenges at home such as poverty, hunger or homelessness. But you can support us too. We are helping thousands of disadvantaged students and their families each year thanks to the generous support of our funders. We need your support

At School-Home Support, our remit is to improve attendance. We have been helping disadvantaged students through a bespoke service of whole family support with and through schools to help understand and tackle barriers to good school attendance. We do this by building trust, resilience and skills across the whole family. We also work with schools and policy makers to share best practice to improve low attendance.

Children and families are at the centre of everything we do. We help disadvantaged students like Mina (featured below) who, aged 4, was already missing too much of her schooling due to what was happening at home. We worked with her and her family to create a positive cycle of support. Our ultimate goal being to make an effective, long-lasting impact in her and her family’s life by strengthening the bridge between home and school.

School-Home Support’s mission is to get children in school, ready to learn, whatever it takes. Our ambitious vision is that every child will be in school, every day, by 2050.

Case Study

Mina and Neha’s story

Mina is 4 years old and was referred to School-Home Support because she was persistently absent from school, often due to illness. Her attendance was just 63%. School-Home Support practitioner Ellen had the time to get to know Mina’s family and her older sister Neha, and understand the challenges they were facing at home, so that she could offer the support they needed to get Mina and Neha back into school, ready to learn.

How we work with corporates

Raise aspirations and close the gap in educational inequality

Children from lower-income households are less likely to attend school regularly and less likely to find work after school. Partner with us to help ensure disadvantaged young people get the skills they need to lead secure adult lives.

  - Raise Aspirations: ‘Welcome to the Workplace’ virtual sessions where your employees speak to SHS young people about their education, ambitions and dreams.
  - Get Parents into Employment: Volunteers work one-to-one with parents/carers to build their first CV or practice interview techniques.
  - Combat Poverty through Giving: Staff can buy a Christmas gift for a specific child. Employees can also get involved in our Book Drive supporting children whose family cannot afford to buy books.
  - Translation Services: Some of your employees can help families access support from SHS Practitioners, by acting as a translator during online meetings.
  - Improve Basic Skills: support an inter-school book review competition or join ‘Maths for Work’ sessions.

This exciting partnership will run for three years, and is filled with numerous fundraising activities each year. We have been delighted to get involved in a number of creative fundraising activities including hosting an ‘are you smarter than a 10 year old quiz’, running a 5-a-side football tournament and supporting CIBC to deliver a scavenger hunt around the city.
