Through thick and thin, we’ve shown up for children and young people, supported their families, and advocated for changes in education policy and practice.
Our work isn’t done yet. As we reflect on our journey, let’s remember the growing need for support that families, schools and parents have today to get children back to school, ready to learn.
Join us as we reflect on our journey and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring every child is in school, ready to learn.
The School Attendance Crisis
On the year of our 40th anniversary we’ve been looking back at all the positive changes our colleagues made to the lives of hundreds of children and their families over years and how School-Home Support has adapted through challenging times to show up for families and schools.
40 years later, school attendance rates are still very high, with a staggering 1.5 million children persistently absent from school in 2022/2023. This crisis leaves thousands of children missing out on essential education, increasing their risks of unemployment, involvement in criminal activities, and perpetuating cycles of poverty.
The root causes of persistent and severe absence are complex
Families today are facing unprecedented challenges. These struggles are making it harder for families to keep their children in school, leaving many young people falling through the cracks. Some of the most common issues families present are:
-
The effects of the pandemic
-
The cost of living crisis
-
Unemployment
-
Undiagnosed mental health issues
-
Housing insecurity
-
Domestic violence
School-Home Support practitioners play a crucial role in addressing these challenges through early intervention, whole family support, and a multi-agency approach.
Our practitioners are needed today more than ever
Our practitioners play a vital role in bridging the gap between home and school, offering families the tailored support they need to overcome barriers to education. They work tirelessly on the frontlines, listening to families’ concerns, building trust, and providing practical solutions to complex challenges like poverty, mental health issues, and housing instability. From creating personalised attendance plans to offering emotional support, our practitioners work not only with children but with the whole family unit to make sure none is left behind.
Their unwavering commitment has transformed the lives of countless families, helping students return to school, improve attendance, and thrive in their education.
