Journeys to good attendance

Children from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with special educational needs are losing more learning than their peers. Rates of school absence vary significantly across the country, adding additional barriers to education depending on where families live.

Government data on pupil absence in England shows that a record 171,000 children were ‘severely absent’ from school in the academic year 2023/2024.

At School-Home Support, we help children and their families, partner with schools and campaign for change.

During the last academic year we reached 12,457 individual family members, we provided direct attendance support to 1,077 children who improved attendance, gaining 5,745 extra days of learning.

Among severely absent children, 65% achieved an average improvement of 29%, or 58 additional days in school, an additional term of learning.

Our work with schools

In 2024/2025, School-Home Support practitioners provided 7,600 days of additional support in schools, giving teachers more time to focus on teaching and learning.

Our aim is to help build a community of schools with the capacity, skills and culture to include families in designing and delivering whole school attendance strategies.

This year our practitioners provided 7,600 days of additional support in schools, giving teachers and school leaders more time to focus on teaching.

This year was the first running our Attendance Support and Development Programme, a 3-level learning programme for pastoral staff that shares essential insights to tackle attendance challenges.

94% of participants said they gained the most benefit from the individual supervision sessions.
77% of participants improved their knowledge of SEND related topics.

The cost of tackling attendance

It costs School-Home Support approximately £1,000 to fund one tailored plan, per child per year.

The annual cost to the exchequer/tax payer of a pupil missing at least five weeks of school (those below the ‘persistent absence’ threshold) is £2,166. Comparing this to the £1,000 it costs School-Home Support to deliver one year of tailored support, we can halve the cost of tackling persistent absence.
