The Fresh Start transition toolkit is a must have programme for any practitioner working with children and young people around transition.
Based on the idea that secondary school provides a ‘fresh start’ the toolkit helps pupils build the knowledge and confidence they need to cope with the difficult transition from primary to secondary school.
The programme comprises of six modules that are ideally delivered in six weekly one hour sessions, they examine the problems children most frequently encounter in their new environment and offer clear, simple strategies for dealing with them. It provides pupils with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their hopes and fears about secondary school but most of all it empowers children to start taking responsibility for their own behaviour and learning. The programme is also packed full of tips, case studies, data collection forms for facilitators and worksheets and activities for the pupils.
The Fresh Start transition toolkit was developed by three SHS practitioners that were working with Year 7 pupils that were struggling to adapt to a new, more demanding environment at secondary school. These young people were facing similar problems from bullying and making new friends to getting organised for the school day. The result was the Fresh Start transition toolkit which was delivered in 10 primary schools in London helping children make a success of their secondary school careers.
