Welcome to School-Home Support’s Professional Development opportunities – available to you across the Spring and Summer term. The workshops will address many current issues faced by both professionals and families in need. Universal Credits & Benefits

Delivered by Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)

Course aim:Universal Credit is an in and out of work benefit which has been introduced to give support to those who are unable to work and to those who need to find and progress in work. The sessions will cover:

  • The introduction to Universal Credit Full Service which is a completely digital service
  • The claimant journey and the support available for those who may find any part of the process challenging.

Effectively Supporting Transitions

Delivered by School-Home Support (SHS)

Course aim: this full-day course is an internal delivery to up-skill practitioners on the toolkits available for use with YP and families across the key educational transitions, with a focus on the primary to secondary transition. The sessions will cover:

  • Identify the types of transitions faced by families
  • Understand the pastoral function during the primary to secondary transition cycle
  • Identify barriers to effective education-based transitions to CYP & families
  • Explore strategies to support CYP and parents/carers through the transition
  • Understand and embed the SHS fresh start transition programme/RFS & RFSS
  • Effectively enable families to support themselves through transitions
  • Reflect on own practice in sustaining positive relationships with families and professionals pre/post-transition.

Increasing Attendance

Delivered by School-Home Support (SHS)

Course aim: learning objectives include:

  • To identify children and families in need of support, spotting the early signs from families in distress
  • To understand national and local policies and initiatives on attendance and exclusion
  • To explore new methods of engaging and working in partnership with families with complex issues to support attendance and reduce exclusion
  • To work collaboratively with other agencies to support attendance improvement strategies.

Mental Health First Aid

Delivered by School-Home Support (SHS)

Course aim: this one day workshop is an introduction to signs, symptoms and strategies used to support young people with mental health conditions and their families. Learning objectives:

  • An understanding of why young people experience mental health issues
  • A basic overview of some of the most common mental health issues young people experience
  • Developing skills and strategies to support young people in accessing the right type of help and support.

Serious Case Reviews (SCR)

Delivered by School-Home Support (SHS)

Course aim: this course will be an internal delivery from SHS Safeguarding Manager and will look in detail at a recent Serious Case Review and the lessons learnt for future practice. Learning objectives include:

  • Understand the lessons learnt from a recent SCR in relation to safe practice with children and families
  • Discuss effective multi-agency working techniques
  • Share good practice examples with colleagues.
