We helped children in six boroughs get 'ready for school' this year

News article from September 11, 2017

School-Home Support wants all children to be supported effectively during school transitions. Our ‘Ready For School (RFS)’ and ‘Ready For Secondary School (RFSS)’ workshops support parents to understand the importance of their children being ‘ready’ for the next stage of their education.

Thanks to support from a number of funders, this year families in Enfield, Bexley, Hackney, Hammersmith, Tower Hamlets and Westminster had the opportunity to attend our ‘Ready for School’ workshops where they were able to pick up tips and strategies to help them prepare their child for their entry into formal education. Parents of children moving from primary to secondary school were also catered for with ‘Ready for Secondary School’ workshops.

The workshops targeted families from disadvantaged backgrounds and families with English as an additional language who were likely to be less familiar with the English education system.

Starting school is a giant step for a little person – but the transition can be worrying for parents too! After the workshops parents told us:

“I have learned who to ask for help if I’m worried about my child’s needs.”
“I was able to share concerns and discuss solutions to solve them.”

Parents also learned the importance of supporting their child to be able to undertake daily practical tasks independently:

“(I will) help my son to learn to do up his coat.”
“(I will) help my daughter become fully toilet trained.”

It’s often the ‘little things’ like this that can help children make the transition to school confidently – and can make all the difference to their first experience of education.

Our thanks go to the following funders for making these ‘Ready for School’ workshops possible:

Allen and Overy
Aston Mansfield
The Big Lottery Fund (National Lottery)
Clifford Chance
GE
Hornsey Parochial Charities
John Lyon’s Charity
The Old Enfield Charitable Trust
