SHS in the Media: Launching the Big Give Christmas Challenge this #GivingTuesday!
News article from November 28, 2017
It’s been a busy day in the SHS office this Giving Tuesday. To launch our Big Give Christmas Challenge 2017, our Head of Family Intervention, Maggie Mitchell, appeared on several radio shows with Laurence Guinness, CEO of The Childhood Trust. The Childhood Trust are generously matching all donations made to the SHS Welfare Fund over the next week, and Maggie and Laurence spoke about the wider issue of child poverty in the UK as well as how donations can support children living in poverty this Christmas.
Research by The Childhood Trust has shown that disadvantaged children in London will receive Christmas presents valued at just £19.55 compared to the average value of £145 spent on children in the UK, highlighting the scale of inequality for children in the capital. Family pets have on average £22 spent on them at Christmas, whilst many of the children being supported by charities in the capital have said they receive nothing at all.
