Celebrating World Book Day 2023 with School-Home Support

News article from April 11, 2023

Throughout the month of March, we teamed up with our incredible corporate partners to celebrate World Book Day. Together, through our Book Drive, our partners donated 209 books to our partner schools.

Book donations have a huge impact for the children and young people we support, as School-Home Support practitioners choose the books they know the children they work with will enjoy and get value from. They can also choose from a list of recommended books focusing on equality, diversity and inclusion and which recognise and celebrate everyone’s unique identities and experiences. Of the 209 books donated this year, 155 had a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion.

One young person supported by a School-Home Support practitioner in Barking and Dagenham said: “I am looking forward to reading ‘In My Head’ as it seems like a good book and I feel like it would help me understand and manage my mental health more. I read two pages and feel like I can relate. The quotes are relatable. Thank you so much for donating these books to our school.”

On World Book Day itself, it was fantastic to see the fundraising activities our partners got up to celebrate on the day, including bake sales and book themed quizzes. A huge thank you to our partners for raising an incredible £2,208!

At Grafton Primary School, Rob Powell, children’s author and Director of Pro Bono & Corporate Responsibility at Weil delivered a creative writing session to two of the school’s classes. The children could then enter a creative writing competition by writing a 500 word story on the theme ‘If I were King or Queen for the day’. The entries are now with Weil for judging and the winner will receive a WHSmith voucher.

Here at School-Home Support, staff across the organisation dressed up as their favourite book characters, took part in a book swap and shared their best book recommendations for colleagues. Of course, there was also lots of cake!

Thank you to everyone who took part in our World Book Day celebrations, and for sharing the joy of reading far and wide!
