Celebrating our first-ever Legacy donation

News article from July 13, 2020

As an ex-Headteacher, Ms P. knew about the range of issues that disadvantaged children face outside of the classroom and the huge impact these can have on their learning in the classroom. Throughout her teaching career, Ms P. was proactive in supporting disadvantaged children and families in her London school community with the many barriers to learning they were facing.

This passion followed Ms P. throughout her life and culminated in a generous gift to School-Home Support in her will. As a result, Ms P.’s legacy will continue to live on, providing support for future generations of disadvantaged children.

We were overwhelmed to learn ofMs P.’s very generous gift in will. The legacy she has left will be invaluable in helping get children in school, ready to learn. The timing of this couldn’t have been known, but during the current pandemic, when our fundraising has been impacted and the demand for SHS services has quadrupled, we are particularly thankful. This is SHS’ first legacy gift and we hope that it will inspire others to consider supporting us with a gift in their will.”
– Jaine Stannard, Chief Executive, School-Home Support

The inspiring and generous gift that Ms P. left to SHS will help to ensure that every child, regardless of the disadvantage they face, will have the support they need to thrive and achieve at school.

From 2017 to 2019, our most vulnerable pupils struggling with school absence increased their attendance by an average of 50 days per pupil per year – an extra 10 weeks of school.

During the current pandemic, at a time when school closures are almost certain to increase educational inequalities and children are going unseen and unprotected this is particularly significant. Ms P.’s kindness will play a vital role in ensuring disadvantaged children are safe, fed and able to access their education during this difficult time and beyond.

If you’d like to leave a gift in your will to help ensure children have the support they need to thrive and achieve at school, we strongly recommend you use the services of a solicitor. We are grateful for every gift no matter how big or small. Any donation from your will, after your loved ones have been looked after, can make a world of difference.

If you do decide to leave a gift in will to School-Home Support, we’d really like to hear from you. Please contact changemaker@shs.org.uk and we can discuss the impact that your legacy gift can have on vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
