Child poverty is a huge barrier to education. Help us stop it.
You can stop child poverty being a barrier to education
This Christmas, we are taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge! We are aiming to raise £15,000 for the School-Home Support (SHS) Welfare Fund, every penny will go directly to providing essential items for some of the poorest families we support.
For one week only, from Tuesday 3 December to Tuesday 10 December 2019, every penny raised will be doubled thanks to our generous match funders!

Poverty has a negative impact on children’s education. Families lack money for school uniform or shoes, and we know children that sleep on a mattress shared with parents and siblings. The reality for many children is that poverty impedes their school attendance, engagement in learning and behaviour.
The SHS Welfare Fund provides families living in poverty with essential items such as emergency food, clothing, and bedding and beds. The SHS Welfare Fund is critical, you know that a clean school uniform improves a child’s attendance, that a child is more engaged in learning after a good night’s sleep in their own bed, and we all want to see a child in a warm winter coat over Christmas. These items transform mindsets by reminding families that good things can and do happen, and also encourage families to engage with our practitioners in schools, opening the door to more long-term support.
Last year we made over 230 grants to disadvantaged children, young people, and families. Children like Nia aged 10.
We need to raise £15,000 to help the poorest families we work with. With your help, we can get there. Every penny of the money will be used to provide items such as:
- Beds and bedding for around 30 children and families
- Clothes and uniform for around 45 children
- White goods (e.g. fridge freezer, washing machine) for around 20 families
- Support with school travel for around 40 children
- Emergency food/School meals for around 35 children and families
Please help us ensure poverty doesn’t impact on children’s education.
We’d love you tell your friends and colleagues about the Big Give and encourage them to donate. Your help is very much appreciated!
