A Royal Visit to Lister Community School

News article from March 4, 2016

The Queen made a very special visit to one of our partner schools in East London this week. Visiting Lister Community School in Newham, the Queen met with pupils, staff and charities who support the school in their work, including School-Home Support.

Marilyn, the SHS Practitioner based in Lister, does a lot of work with young carers, making sure that they get the support they need. Maintaining school work can be very challenging for children when they are worried about how their mum or dad are doing. Marilyn puts in a lot of work to understand the pressures and circumstances of each pupil, to make sure that the school can support them effectively.

The Queen spoke to Marilyn about her work, and to the young carers. They told her about a recent visit to BlackRock Investment Bank; how much they had enjoyed it and what they had learnt. They described how the visit raised their aspirations and extended their knowledge of potential careers; it made sense of the hard work they need to put in at school. Our Chief Executive, Jan Tallis also talked about the wider of work of School-Home Support and the importance of making sure every child is in school and ready to learn.
