Our work with local authorities

Blackpool Opportunity Area (2019)

In January 2019, we secured a Blackpool Opportunity Area local authority bid to expand our early interventional work in Blackpool, where poorer pupils lag behind their peers more than two years (on average) by the time they finish their GCSEs. Our Blackpool team have already had a big impact working within every secondary school.

Support for ‘Troubled Families’ (2013-2018)

Female practitioner and white_boy_10 yearsThe ‘Troubled Families’ programme is a national initiative set up by the Government in 2012 to support families to have a better life, whilst also saving money by transforming services around the needs of the family. The programme targets intervention at families with multiple problems, including crime, anti-social behaviour, mental ill-health, domestic abuse and unemployment.

Working in partnership with SHS helped us to achieve evidenced and sustained outcome for our children and families.”
Toby Kinder, Group Manager Early Intervention, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham

We believe this programme has transformed the lives of thousands of families. Feedback shows families really valued the SHS approach we took. Most of all, the families have shown courage, dedication and commitment to change their lives for the better.

She was persistent, strong but not rude, felt a connection. Kept me on my toes, she was always there and available. Very professional, leaves no stone unturned, will make sure she does everything that she says she will do.
– Parent when asked how the programme had improved their family’s lives
“She worked with me, she believed in me, no one has ever given the same kind of time or dedication.”
– Jenny, mother of five
“Before I met [‘Troubled Families’ Senior Practitioner] Sam, the kids were out of control, I was always drinking, couldn’t handle them. I wasn’t getting them to school. I met Sam, everything’s had a complete and utter turnaround. Not drinking, going to the gym, finally got myself a part-time job, the kids are going to school. The boys have done brilliant.”
“I am so happy with my son now. I used to be very upset because of his behaviour at school but now I never get a bad call home. He is happy and making a lot of effort in school. You have helped keep us calm when our landlord made us homeless and fought with housing to keep us close to work and school. Your service is the best, we didn’t know there was this kind of help.”
